Ukraine open Chernobyl area for tourists in 2011

At the beginning of next year, Ukraine plans to open the sealed zone around the Chernobyl reactor for visitors who want to learn more about the tragedy, that almost a quarter of a century ago occurred, the emergency situations Ministry said Monday.

The Ministry also said Monday it hopes to complete to create a new more secure shell for the exploded reactor by 2015. The new shelter covers the original iron and concrete structure of the reactor, the radiation, crack and threatens, reduce leaking was hastily established.


The new shell is 345 feet (105 M) high, 853 feet (260 M) wide and 490 metres long (150 metres). It weighs 20,000 tonnes and will be pushed through the old shelter with rail tracks.
